The Panther Press Story

SpeakSafe is an organization dedicated to saving adolescents from exploitation. The team made up of program organizers, college students and highschool students work together to attend conferences, create presentations and present to various schools across the Bay Area. SpeakSafe educates individuals about exploitation, human trafficking and much more. In 2022 the team shared many presentations in an effort to spread awareness at schools in the Bay Area.

Marlene Capra, founder of SpeakSafe, visits different schools where she talks about youth exploitation and brings awareness to young people across the Bay Area. Capra speaks about her own experiences in highschool where she was sexually exploited and how, at the time, she thought it was normal. This experience promoted Capra to found SpeakSafe;  her goal is to educate youth and work to prevent exploitation.

Capra explained just how prevalent exploitation is and why it is so important to educate young people about this topic.

“Youth Exploitation is happening in every city and state,” Capra said. It does not favor a certain zip code or economic background, race, gender or age in Marin County and neighboring countries.”

According to a study from the University of California San Diego, more than 86% of women in California report having experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime.

SpeakSafe is looking for new volunteers. This can be a great summer job opportunity open to anyone who wants to help spread awareness. SpeakSafe is looking for volunteers from all different backgrounds. They offer paid internships and volunteer work. For more information you can email marcapra@comcast.net. San Domenico will hopefully host SpeakSafe at an assembly next year.

From Our Board President, Paula Kamena:

All children deserve an opportunity to grow into adulthood in a safe, wholesome and healthful manner.  Dangers of exploitation and victimization have grown exponentially with our digital age.  In order to keep kids safe, the adults who guide them must stay one step ahead of the bad guys.  SpeakSafe is an incredible organization, led by our able Executive Director Marlene Capra.  We normalize the conversation about exploitation so that this harm comes out of the shadows and into daily conversation to keep all alert and safe.

Stop the online sharing of explicit images or videos.

It’s scary when this happens to you, but it can happen to anyone. You’ve taken the first step, and we’re here to help you with the next steps. Take It Down is a service provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

This is a free service.

Update December 2022

SpeakSafe - Save Adolescents from Exploitation was developed as a nonprofit starting July 2021 to further launch prevention on Human Trafficking/Exploitation, educating our school staff, parents, students, service providers, Law Enforcement, and community members. We are implementing our mandated Legislation requirements for California regarding Human Trafficking of our youth. We have continued to grow our youth team, ages 17-22, from 2019 and even during the pandemic. Many on our team has had some lived experience of exploitation, which makes their voice valuable to our discussions and presentations in creating a place of safety and understanding for students to find a place of strength and realize they too can make a difference. The passion for this work comes out of our own stories that can change the course of someone’s life.

During the last year of the Covid Pandemic, while we waited for school staff as they were addressing their immediate concerns in continuing the education of our students, we pivoted to present our trainings, presentations, and discussions to law enforcement, community partners, parents, and students.
